Dear ALS Community,

Georgie and I (Tilly) are delighted to be writing the weekly email this week, to give you all an insight into what we have been up to in Year 3 and our time in the Lower Juniors. I started at ALS in Reception and Georgie joined in Year 1 just as Covid was starting. I am in Veritas House and Georgie is in Dedicas House.

For me, the best thing about Arnold Lodge School is that we have good teachers and friends. We get a really good education and lots of trips as well! My best memory of Arnold Lodge is all of the friends I have made over the years. My favourite subjects are Immersion, Maths (we are doing statistics at the moment and creating lots of tally charts, pictograms and bar graphs this week), English and Science because they are fun, interesting and sometimes really hard which I enjoy as I really like a challenge! In Immersion at the moment we are learning about the Vikings and are making a fleet of Longboats. My favourite day of the week is a Tuesday morning because that is when we go Swimming at the University of Warwick swimming pool. I really enjoy our swimming lessons because I can see that I am getting better and better at it. I can’t really choose one thing that I enjoy the most because it really is a bit of everything, I love being with all my friends and teachers, attending all my extracurricular clubs and I love our school lunches!

My name is Georgie and I joined Arnold Lodge into Year 1 when I moved back from abroad just before Covid started. I was nervous about starting a new school when I moved back but those nerves disappeared quickly on my first day when I started to make friends. The teachers are so friendly and welcoming and you can really be yourself. The best thing about ALS for me is that we have great teachers, wonderful friends and amazing lessons. My favourite subjects are Maths, English and Art. In English we have been writing descriptive 'Wanted' posters to help the farmers Boggis, Bunce & Bean capture Fantastic Mr Fox! I also like Immersion because we learn about the past which is very interesting! The best day of the week for me is a Monday because it is Art in the afternoon and in the morning, we have Music. I find that creating art helps me when I might be feeling upset. I really enjoy making friends with those in my year but I also really enjoy making friends with the children in other year groups as we all play together and sometimes have lessons together. I also like being challenged each day by getting harder work in lessons and eating the yummy school lunches which are amazing! I am going to hand back over to Tilly now to keep writing …

This week in Year 3 has been action packed. On Monday we started with the Readathon, I am reading The Witches by Roald Dahl and really enjoying it. Georgie is reading Bad Dad by David Walliams. Don’t forget to ask family members and friends to sponsor you to read as many books as you can or as much of your book as you can. More information can be found on the Read for Good Readathon website. On Tuesday, we took part in the Lower Juniors pancake races to celebrate Pancake Day. We also had pancakes for pudding at lunch, Georgie had icing sugar on top of hers and I had plain pancakes. On Wednesday we immersed ourselves in making Roald Dahl egg carton characters – we made either Fantastic Mr Fox or Fantastic Mrs Fox – they are drying at the moment but we can’t wait to see what they look like. On Thursday, we all dressed up for World Book Day, I went as the Grand High Witch from The Witches and Georgie went as the Roly Poly Bird from The Enormous Crocodile. It was such fun to dress up as the characters and celebrate the importance of reading.

Over the course of the year each Junior class explores a continent, we are learning about South America and so far have learnt about the Incas, Peru and the Amazon rainforest. When we go to The Birmingham Botanical Gardens later this term we will get an idea of what the plants and atmosphere are like in South America.

Our mantra for next week is from Veritas: Live the school values, don't just talk about them. Mr Hawkins, Head of Veritas House, writes: the core values of being kind, honest and hardworking can create a well-rounded individual, but going one step further it develops an individual's traits to seek to help others. We constantly talk about the school values and the meanings behind them, after-all they are what underpin our thriving house system. But as much as we talk about them and are frequently reminded of the benefits, it can be challenging to put them into action. Be honest, talk about the values, but apply them to your school life, home life and everything in between.

Next week its National Careers Week, our pupils from Year 4 upwards will have the opportunity to hear from so many interesting parents who have careers in different fields from a Pilot, Engineer, Nurse to those involved in Marketing, Finance and Law. It's set to be a super week, thank you to all those who are involved next week. As part of National Careers Week 2022, Unifrog are hosting a virtual Next Steps Fair for students on 8 March, 5-8pm. The fair will give pupils the chance to hear from employers, universities, and apprenticeship providers in expert live sessions and an opportunity to drop by their virtual booths to chat with them directly! The webinar is free and all senior pupils can book onto the fair by clicking on the orange webinar icon in their Unifrog account and selecting Next Steps Student Fair.

We hope you all have a lovely weekend.

Best wishes,

Tilly & Georgie
