Dear all the Mummies, Daddies, Grannies, Grandads, Aunties, Uncles, Brothers, Sisters, Cousins, Friends and pets,

We are very excited to be writing the weekly email this week! We are the youngest members of the ALS school community but certainly not the quietest – we are Reception! On our first day at ALS we were all bit worried about starting at ‘big school’, it was a new place with lots of 'big children' so some of us hid behind our Mummies and Daddies, some of us just sat quietly taking it all in … but within a few days we were running around the playground as though we had been here for years. So far this year we have done lots of fun learning, our topics have been Traditional Tales, Superheroes and Mythical Creatures and our favourite activity to do is ‘Plearning’, which is playing and learning at the same time which we do in the Rainbow Room. We have been busy learning our Little Wandle phonics to help us with our sound blending into words for reading and in Maths we have been practicing our counting and our number bonds to 10. We also love playing “Que hora es Señor lobo?” in Spanish with Mr S. We are still trying to teach Miss Kelsall and Miss Patterson how to do their Spanish numbers! This half term the topic we have been following is ‘Growth’ and have put our learning into practice, growing our own ‘Hand Gardens’ and on our trips to the Botanical Gardens and The Farm. At the Farm, we saw some very muddy pigs, an adorable little lamb and “a goat with a really big beard”. This morning, we had our first forest school session of the year and this afternoon we have been to the allotment where we planted broad beans and peas which we will watch grow over the next few months.

The climbing frame is one of our favourite things to play on in the playground, especially jumping from the top platform to dodge the lava on the ground - sometimes there is lava on the ground and sometimes there are crocodiles lurking under our feet! We think our favourite day at school has to be Friday because it can only mean one thing … CHIP DAY! Chips, pizza and peas - yes please, what a treat! This is often followed by apple crumble and custard which is just the best. We have very full tummies on Fridays!

Next week, it’s our last week of the Easter term so Mr Gear has asked us to remind you that for the big children in blue blazers (Seniors) there will be no ExEn next week. Genius Hour is running on Monday from 3:50pm – 5:15pm for parents of pupils in Years 4 – 6. Mr Smart has sent some more details here. For children in pink blazers (Juniors), ExEn will run as normal on Monday & Tuesday (excluding any sessions run by external providers which have already finished).

On Wednesday 6th April, our last day of term, we are having a whole school non-uniform day in support of the people of Ukraine. For a £2 donation pupils can wear non-uniform for the day with an optional yellow and blue theme. Please can you give any donations to your form tutor or class teacher.

A big thank you from ALPA, the Arnold Lodge Parents Association, to all the parents who attended the ALPA Coffee Morning on Thursday, it was a huge success. If anyone else would like to get involved with further ALPA events, please email [email protected].

Our reception team have asked us to remind you to complete the data review sheets which have been sent out from DocuSign. That is lots of big words for us but hopefully you will know what that means. If you have any questions about this please email [email protected].

In September, we are super excited to be in Year 1 and have all of our birthdays again. Hopefully when we turn 6, we will all be able to finally reach the top of the climbing wall!

In the meantime, we hope you all have a lovely Easter and that the Easter bunny brings you lots of chocolate.

Best wishes,

ALS Reception Class
